How It Works

How Liquid Filter Media Works

Liquid filter media is the fabric that does the work inside a filter bag or other liquid filter. As liquid flows through it, the media holds back particulate and other solids. How it does that depends on the type of filtration media.

Felts are depth media. Their fibers form a thick, porous layer with a large internal surface area, so particles are trapped through the full depth of the felt and it holds a lot of solids. Woven mesh is surface media. Particles larger than the mesh opening stop on the surface, which gives more exact particle retention and lets many meshes be cleaned and reused.

Matching the media to the liquid, the solids and the flow rate is what gives a filter long life and clean output. That is why our technical sales staff chooses from dozens of fabrics when designing your liquid filters. For dust collector media, see our air filtration filter media.

Warning Signs

Signs You Need Different Filter Media

  • Filters blind or load up too quickly

  • Particles pass through into the filtered liquid

  • Pressure drop climbs faster than normal

  • Loose fibers show up downstream

  • Media weakens from heat or chemicals

Filter Media Code Filter Type Stocked Micron Range Best For
Polyester Felt PE Depth 1 to 200 General purpose fine filtration
Polypropylene Felt PP Depth 1 to 200 Water and process liquids
Nylon Monofilament NMO Surface 45 to 2,400 Precise, reusable straining
Polyester Multifilament PEMU Surface 100 to 1,500 Economical coarse filtration

Polyester and Polypropylene Felts

We stock polyester and polypropylene needle felts from 1 to 200 micron for liquid filtration. Felt is a depth media with high dirt holding capacity, which makes it a low cost choice for fine filtration of water, chemicals, coatings and other process liquids.

All of our liquid filtration felt materials are available with a plain, singed/glazed or covered finish. Polyester felt is a strong general purpose media, and polypropylene felt is often chosen where broad chemical compatibility matters.

Mesh Media

Nylon Monofilament and Polyester Multifilament

Nylon monofilament (NMO) mesh is woven from single, smooth fibers, so the openings are precise and particles release easily when the media is cleaned. We stock NMO from 45 to 2,400 micron for accurate surface filtration and straining.

Polyester multifilament (PEMU) is woven from threads made of many fine filaments. It is an economical surface media for coarser filtration, and we stock it from 100 to 1,500 micron.

Finishes

Felt Finishes for Liquid Filtration

The finish on a felt changes how its surface behaves in service. Every liquid filtration felt we stock is available in all three finishes.

Felt Finish What It Does When to Ask About It
Plain Standard needle felt surface General liquid filtration
Singed / Glazed Locks down loose surface fibers to reduce fiber migration and help the filter cake release Clean output is critical or the cake needs to release easily
Covered Available on all liquid filtration felts Ask our team whether a covered felt fits your liquid

FAQs

Liquid Filter Media Questions

Send us your liquid, solids and micron rating, and we will match the right filter media.

Liquid filter media is the fabric that does the filtering inside a liquid filter. It is cut and sewn into filter bags and other liquid filters, and it holds back particulate and other solids while the liquid passes through. The most common types are needle felts and woven mesh.

We stock nylon monofilament (NMO) from 45 to 2,400 micron, polyester multifilament (PEMU) from 100 to 1,500 micron, and polyester and polypropylene felts from 1 to 200 micron.

Felt is a depth filtration media. Particles are trapped through the full thickness of the felt, so it holds a lot of solids. Mesh is a surface filtration media woven from monofilament or multifilament fibers, so it stops particles at the surface with more exact particle retention.

Monofilament mesh is woven from single, smooth fibers, which gives precise openings, strength and easy cleaning. Multifilament mesh is woven from threads made of many fine filaments. It is more economical, and its particle retention is less exact.

All of our liquid filtration felt materials are available with a plain, singed/glazed or covered finish. Singeing and glazing lock down loose fibers on the felt surface, which reduces fiber migration into the filtered liquid and helps the filter cake release.

Polyester felt is a good general purpose media for many liquids. Polypropylene felt is often chosen for water and process liquids where broad chemical compatibility matters. Tell us your liquid and temperature and we will recommend the media.

Start with the smallest particle you need to remove and how clean the filtered liquid must be. Felts cover fine filtration from 1 to 200 micron, and our stocked mesh covers coarser filtration from 45 to 2,400 micron. Send us a sample or describe your process and we will match the rating.
