What Is Industrial Liquid Filtration?

Industrial liquid filtration is the process filtration step that removes contaminants, impurities and solid particles from liquids in industrial processes. Process liquids, coolants, cooling water, coatings, chemicals, water and wastewater all carry particulate that has to be removed to protect downstream equipment, improve product quality and safety, meet water quality standards or recover product.

The right filter depends on the types of liquid, the solids and the flow rate. Bag filters handle high flow rates and heavy solids loading at a low cost. Cartridge filters and reverse osmosis membranes provide finer filtration and polishing for clean liquid. Filter presses, belt filter presses and drum filters dewater sludge and separate solids from slurries.

The filter media does the work. Needle felts made from synthetic fibers trap particles through their depth, mesh stops them at the filter surface, pleated cartridges add surface area, and the micron ratings decide what gets through. Effective filtration extends equipment lifespan, cuts downtime and improves operational efficiency. What is industrial liquid filtration?

Industrial liquid filtration removes solids and contaminants from process liquids, water and wastewater. Depending on the liquid and the solids, plants use filter bags in bag filter housings, filter cartridges, reverse osmosis membranes, filter presses, belt filter presses and drum filters.

The main types are liquid filter bags, filter cartridges, reverse osmosis membrane elements, filter press panels, filter belts and drum filter media, and the filter housings that hold bags and cartridges.

Filter bags handle high flow rates and heavy solids loading at a low cost. Filter cartridges provide finer filtration and polishing. Many systems use a bag filter first to remove the heavier solids and a cartridge filter after it for final filtration.

The micron rating depends on the size of the particles you need to remove and how clean the liquid has to be. Our liquid filter bags are available in felt from 1 to 200 micron and mesh from 5 to 1,200 micron, and cartridges are available for finer filtration.

Depth filtration traps particles through the full thickness of the media, as in needle felt bags and melt blown cartridges. Surface filtration stops particles at the surface of the media, as in woven mesh bags and membranes, for more exact particle retention.
