Baghouse Types

Types of Baghouse Dust Collectors

There are only three basic types of baghouses, but hundreds of filter styles go into them. Filter bags differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and even model to model.

Pulse-Jet Baghouses

Dust collects on the outside of filter bags supported by cages. Short bursts of compressed air from pulse valves knock the dust cake off while the collector stays online. Bags install from the top or underside of the tube sheet.

Shaker Baghouses

Dust collects on the inside of the bags, which are usually attached at the closed end with a hook or strap. The bags are cleaned by shaking them, typically with the compartment offline.

Reverse Air Baghouses

Dust collects on the inside of bags that are open at the bottom and connected to the tube sheet. They hang from a spring or J-bolt suspension, with sewn-in spreader rings that keep them from collapsing when the air flow reverses to clean them.

How They Work

How a Baghouse Filter Works

A baghouse is an air pollution control device that removes particulate from a gas stream released by an industrial process. Dirty air enters the baghouse and passes through the fabric filter bags. Dust collects on the surface of the filter as a dust cake, which actually improves filtration efficiency, and clean air leaves through the clean-air plenum.

Filters need regular cleaning and periodic replacement to keep the baghouse at peak performance, and replacement bags need an exact fit to seal properly. Our troubleshooting guide and bag maintenance tips cover the common problems.

Warning Signs

Signs Your Baghouse Needs Attention

  • Differential pressure stays high after cleaning

  • Visible emissions at the stack or clean-air outlet

  • Bags wearing out, tearing or blinding early

  • Dust leaking at doors, seals or the tube sheet

  • Pulse valves or the timing board not firing

Filter Media

Choosing Baghouse Filter Fabric

The right filter fabric depends on the type of dust, gas temperature, moisture and chemistry of your air stream. Our scrim-supported felts add strength and durability, so bags withstand abrasive dust and frequent cleaning cycles while giving fine particle separation and excellent dust release.

We can help identify problems with your current filter media and select one that improves performance. Learn more in which fabric filter media is best.

Filter Fabric Best For
Polyester felt General industrial dust at moderate temperatures
Polypropylene felt Moisture and many chemicals at lower temperatures
Aramid felt Higher-temperature gas streams
Fiberglass Very high-temperature applications
PTFE membrane Fine or sticky dust and high filtration efficiency

Pleated Filter Bags

Pleated Bags for Pulse-Jet Baghouses

Pleated filters are designed to replace traditional filter bag and cage configurations in pulse-jet baghouses and can offer two to three times the filter area of a standard bag.

Because pleated bags are shorter, you use less compressed air when pulsing, and the baghouse gets a larger drop-out area for material to fall out of the air stream before it reaches the filters. We offer many options for media, pleat count and construction, and can help with a bag-to-pleated conversion. See also our cartridge filters.

Baghouse Accessories

Baghouse Parts and Accessories

Baghouse accessories are often overlooked but can be as important as the filters themselves. They include cages, pulse jets, timing boards, hose clamps, hanger bolts, venturis and more. We make cages to fit most pulse-jet baghouses to OEM specs, or improve on them when needed. Browse cages and accessories.

Cleaning systems are critical to every baghouse. We are partnered with Goyen Valves and can help repair or replace defective cleaning systems on pulse-jet collectors. If you suspect a leak, we can help you find it with fluorescent powder and special lights, and we carry precoat to protect new filters before startup.

FAQs

Baghouse Filter Questions

Have a sample bag, a part number or a baghouse that is not performing? Our team can help.

A baghouse filter is a fabric filter bag installed in a baghouse dust collector. Dusty air passes through the fabric, particulate collects on the surface of the filter as a dust cake, and clean air exits the collector. The bags are cleaned on a cycle so the baghouse can keep running.

Shaker, pulse-jet and reverse air. Shaker baghouses collect dust on the inside of the bags and clean them by shaking. Pulse-jet baghouses collect dust on the outside of bags supported by cages and clean them with bursts of compressed air. Reverse air baghouses collect dust on the inside and clean the bags by reversing the air flow.

Send us the bag dimensions, top and bottom style, fabric and the make and model of your baghouse, or send a sample bag. We can cross-reference most filters or duplicate your sample for an exact fit, since an exact fit is what keeps a baghouse sealed and performing.

Bag life depends on the dust, temperature, moisture, air-to-cloth ratio and how well the cleaning system works. Plan a replacement when differential pressure stays high after cleaning, emissions appear at the stack, or the bags are torn, worn or blinded.

Blinding happens when fine, sticky or damp dust works into the filter fabric and will not release during cleaning. Common causes are moisture or condensation, oily or sticky dust, too much cleaning energy driving fines into the media, or the wrong fabric for the application. A precoat on new bags and the right filter fabric help prevent it.

Baghouse filter bags handle heavier dust loads, higher airflow and higher temperatures, and suit large industrial dust collection systems. Cartridge filters use pleated media to fit more filter area into a smaller collector and work well for fine, dry dust. Pleated bags can bring some of that extra area to a pulse-jet baghouse.
